9mm needles
Using 8mm needles and using the long tail method, cast on knitwise and purlwise 48 stitches. This creates a better rib and isn't tight on the bottom row.
Row 1- 4: k, p (48)
Change to 9mm needles
Row 5: k (48)
Row 6: p (48)
Row 7-20: continue in stocking stitch, ending on a p row.
Row 21: k4, k2tog, 8 times (40)
Row 22: p (40)
Row 23: k3, k2tog, 8 times (32)
Row 24: p (32)
Row 25: k2, k2tog, 8 times (24)
Row 26: p1, p2tog, 8 times (16)
Row 27: k2tog, 8 times (8)
Cast off knitwise, leaving a long tail for sewing up. Do a running stitch through the top 8 stitches and pull tight to close the gap, then sew up the sides. Weave in the ends.
You can make or buy a pom pom to put on the top.
